Bristol Law Society (BLS) is a large local law society with a membership in the region of 6000 and is the oldest local law society in the country being founded in 1770.
It has an innovative and collaborative approach to working within and outside the legal profession and is at the forefront of many initiatives, both national and regional. Since 2017, the Society’s offices and library are located at 12 Colston Avenue, right on the centre of Bristol, ideally placed for those members who spend much of their time in and around the Courts or visiting Counsel.
Governance
The Society is governed by a President, two Vice Presidents, other officers and a Council of solicitors. Council members come from a variety of backgrounds, large and small firms, in-house and private practice and cover all areas of legal work in order to reflect the profession as a whole.
Services
Bristol Law Society provides a range of services to its members including a library, an annual programme of courses and seminars and a legal recruitment consultancy.
Events
Throughout the year an increasing number of events is organised for members including events with and for non lawyers, professional dinners with the decision makers of the local firms, two quizzes, a Summer Party, charity Golf Day, the Awards Dinner and Legal Sunday celebrations plus a wide range of educational conferences and workshops. These events are both very successful and well attended – last year we had 150 people at the summer party and over 410 guests at the awards dinner. They are not only fun but also offer the opportunity for members to meet and network with others within and outside the profession. Click for photos
