Looking back at the 1989 Annual Dinner
The 1989 annual dinner of the Bristol Law Society was held at the Grand Hotel, Bristol, on 17 November.
The then president of the society, William Nicks, had as his principal guests the Lord Chancellor Lord Mackay of Clashfern, the President of the Law Society Richard Gaskell and Ludovic Kennedy, together with the Lord Mayor of Bristol.
The dinner was attended by more than 500 members and their guests.
In proposing the toast to the Bristol Law Society, the Lord Chancellor spoke of the problems of a rapidly changing property market which gave rise to both gazumping and gazundering. He pointed out that people were free to enter into contracts in whatever form they wished, and whilst accepting the present system may be best for many people as it is, he would like to see the public being given more information about the choice of dealing methods available to them.
