The College of Legal Practice – SQE Spotlight
Diving into SQE2 October 2024's results
Congratulations to those who have just learnt that they have passed SQE2! The pass mark for October's SQE2 was 61%, consistent with other exams, and the pass rate climbed back to 81%.
Just over 1000 candidates took the exams, a slightly higher number than the July 2024 sitting, but half the April sitting. It was positive to see that the variation in pass rates for this sitting based on ethnic group was smaller than previous sittings, although still too great, for example black/black British candidates had a pass rate of 75% compared to white candidates at 89%. Different religious groups did perform at different levels, for example Muslim candidates had the lowest pass rate as a group (67%).
Similar trends to previous SQE2 sittings came through in terms of disabilities - those that declared a disability are more likely to pass (90% v 82%) and the youngest groups of candidates performed the best.
In terms of social mobility, those candidates where neither of their parents attended university had an average pass rate of 80%, compared to 85% for those who did. It is great to see that the school that candidates attended didn't seem to impact on passing, state-run school pupils had a pass rate of 87% compared 85% for independent/fee-paying school pupils.
Degree classification is still the biggest indicator of success, with candidates with a 1st having a pass rate of 91%, those with a 2:1 at 85% and those with a 2:2 with only a 52% pass rate.
